This is the last remaining building, built by husbands great grandparents in the first half of the 1900's...
On the right side was were hubby's great uncle would keep his tractor and were we briefly stored our ride-on mower before the collapse of the roof...Fortunately our mower was not in it at the time.
The middle was used as a general workshop area and storage we believe...And to the left was once the home of a hog and/or chickens...it still as wire used to build the pen attached to some of the back area, but I could not share photos because it is no longer safe back there.
Can you see the old hand made ladder hanging on the wall?
We are trying to work out how to safely get it out of there to be re-purposed in the garden as a trellis.

The old "door" leaning in the front is soon to be re-purposed else where on the property...We intend to try and salvage as much of the old wood as possible to be put to re-use around the property and to pay homage to a building that was such an important part of daily life around here for well over 60yrs...
These will be the last photos taken of the old barn as over the next few weeks it is coming down. BUT, if we can't save it, by golly we will at least salvage it :)

Salvaging is a great way to preserve as much as you can...buildings like this make me sad!!! I'm happy that you have a hand in its destiny!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to read that you are going to salvage as much as possible - so good to go against the trend to build everything new.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice that you will be able to put that old building to a new purpose-even if it is in pieces.
ReplyDeleteLove that you are going to try to salvage it--it’s a neat old barn. Love that ladder--you must get that out--it would be great in your garden :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing with FFF!
What a project! You will have a wonderful sense of accomplishment once you've re-purposed the old wood. :))
ReplyDeleteI love reusing old building material. Something old is new again.
ReplyDeletehow wonderful ... to repurpose that barn and hold on the memories. well done!
ReplyDeleteRepurposing is a good thing. I hope that you'll let us know more about this big project.
ReplyDeleteI am always completely captivated by dilapidated buildings... I've had an attraction to them from as far back as I can remember and so I thoroughly enjoy your appreciation and documentation of the derilect haunting beauty of such buildings.
ReplyDeleteDawn... The Bohemian
What I wouldn't give to get my hands on some of that beautiful aged wood! The things you could do with that! ANd what a lovely photo (if not a little sad) that old building makes!
ReplyDeleteI have a barn that must have parts that are over 100 years old (our farmhouse is 150 years old). I am toying with the idea of converting it to a single storey building and using some of the wood for other projects. It isn't on our 'must-do' list though!
It's good that you are documenting what is there and then salvaging what you can. Your photos will be important in years to come.
ReplyDeleteYes...salvaging is the answer! Too often, people burn these old structures----such a waste.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad that it is too far gone to save, but at least using the wood elsewhere will be good.
ReplyDeletePlease keep shooting pictures of the "conversion" process. It will be an interesting study as it comes apart and later where the parts are reused.
ReplyDeleteI did not get to post this week but my photos taken this week are of "remains" as well. I will share soon.
In our old barn we also have a similar ladder and I can not get to it yet either.
How wonderful that you are going to salvage as much as you can of this old barn. It will give your new place a sentimental feel! Hope you can get to that old ladder...I would love to go through all the junk!
ReplyDeleteHaving joined Mosaic Monday this week I am now enjoying blog hopping around the world admiring everyone else's beautiful photography and gaining inspiration. It cheers me when so much of the world around us is in turmoil for one reason or another.
ReplyDeleteWe love old buildings and have almost finished a renovation ourselves so this post was particularly interesting.
Your name is Kelsie? My daughter's name is Kesley! How neat! =)
ReplyDeleteIt's good to hear that you're salvaging as much as possible out of that old barn... some people just destroy & burn them... They built things differently back then... strong, & it's good to know that at least this place will be reused! =)
Thanks so much for joining
What great pictures you have taken before there are anymore changes.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad it had to get to this state. I love how your using the old wood for something else.
ReplyDeleteI love the history and the sheer beauty of old buildings. So happy to hear that you will be trying to salvage the materials -- they will make some great projects. Thanks for sharing at MM> :)
ReplyDeleteyour blog is genial!!
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about this photo? It is solemn enough to bring you back to the past.
